This week is the first week that Cecily and I have been able to say that we are both priests. It was a wonderful and amazing day at Peterborough Cathedral on Sunday as Cecily was ordained a priest. Thank you to everyone who came, for your words of support and encouragement, and your prayers. Cecily and I first met when we started training for the priesthood. So, there was a real point of arrival for me on Monday morning, thinking: ‘Wow, we are starting the day together as priests. Priests for the rest of our lives, living out our call together.’ Getting to this place can feel like such a big adventure already, but we know that the adventure is only just beginning.
The Christian faith can feel a bit like that. So often we think that once you are baptised and/or confirmed, you have reached the final point of the Christian journey and you just have to live in that place for the rest of your life. Many people feel that the big journey of their lives was the point of coming to faith and becoming a Christian – this is their mountain top. These important moments of coming to faith or new steps of faith like confirmation are significant, however, they are not the final step on the journey. These are merely the beginning steps of faith in a faith journey across a lifetime. The adventure isn’t finished, but it is only just beginning.
Some of you might feel excited about your journey of faith. Some of you might feel like you have been stuck in the same place for many years. But remember, the adventure is not over, it’s still going; it’s only just begun. Each day with God is an exciting adventure of faith. God is moving and present in each day of our lives. Our call as Christians is not to have everything figured out on our faith journeys. Our only job is to stay ready to take the next step, believing and trusting that the adventure of faith continues.
I hope and pray that God will be speaking and guiding you this week on your adventure of faith. It may have been a big adventure up to this point already, but know that there is so much more to come. More of God, more of his love and work in our lives. More of his healing, more of his transformation, more of his generosity. The adventure isn’t finished, but it is only just beginning.
