I have been reflecting on the gospel reading from our midweek communion service this week, which was John 15:9-11. Jesus is speaking his final words to his disciples before he goes to the cross. In these few sentences, he captures what it means to be a Christian. Jesus says, ‘Remain in my love.’ This is what our Christian life is all about, the reason we were created. We are meant to be loved by God and to love him in return. We are to live in this love. Everything else flows from this. Jesus says that when we remain in his love, we will have his joy, and this joy will be complete.

If you ask someone what the most important thing they want in life is, they would say that it is to be happy. How do we find happiness? How do we find joy? We find it when we abide in Jesus’ love.

As Christians and as human beings, we were created to live in God’s love and to find life-fulfilling joy in him. Remain in Jesus’ love. If you do only one thing, do this: remain in Jesus’ love.
