School is out for the summer. As well as a break for the kids and schools, the school summer holidays mark a break for much of society. It’s a chance to rest and recover. It’s also an opportunity to do something different from your regular day-to-day routines. Some kids will get summer jobs, some will hang out with friends, some might travel, and many other things. These opportunities to do something different often become the formative memories that stay with us for the rest of our lives. I wonder if the summer break can do the same for our faith. With the change of pace, are there different things you could try that might serve as formative experiences for the rest of your life? Maybe you will set aside time for prayer or Bible reading that you hadn’t previously done. Perhaps you will take on a new form of Christian service through volunteering or pastoral visiting. Maybe you will embark on a pilgrimage. Whatever it is, could this summer be a chance for you to try something new to deepen your faith? I hope that, like the formative summers of our childhood, this summer could be formative for our lives and faith. Go on and give something new a try this summer.
