This week, the Bank of England has cut interest rates to 4%, the lowest in over two years. There will be a mix of feelings towards this change. Some will feel delighted, while others will be worried. These types of changes are meant to have a positive effect, but we will only know the outcome after observing the coming months. This kind of uncertainty can create worry, which is why this week’s Sunday gospel reading seems even more fitting.
This week, we hear Jesus say: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the Kingdom. Sell all your belongings and give the money to the poor. Provide for yourselves purses that don’t wear out, and save your riches in heaven, where they will never decrease, because no thief can get to them, and no moth can destroy them. For your heart will always be where your riches are.”[1]
We are called not to be afraid, trusting that God will provide us with everything we need, including His kingdom. God’s kingdom, His work of love and goodness in this world, will never run out. God will always watch over us and see us through everything. While it is good to steward the money we have well, our earthly wealth will come and go, but God’s riches that we possess will last forever. Whatever this new season may bring financially, remember that you are already wealthy with the riches of God’s kingdom.
